Multiple parties, including Epic, Amazon and Microsoft have been reportedly interested in purchasing Discord for over $10 Billion USD.
Despite Microsoft declining to comment about the negotiation, sources close to Discord have said Microsoft is the front runner in discussions.
“It’s hard to tell the difference between a serious acquisition attempt and a fishing expedition,” said one source, who asked not to be identified. “It can fall apart at any time. The reality is the company is doing really well. I don’t see a reason they would want to sell. They seem to be completely in control of their destiny right now.”
Despite this, one source said the company has signed an exclusive acquisition discussion with one party, meaning it is in final negotiations about a sale.
This comes after Discord reached 140 million active users last month and increased their revenue to $130 million in 2020.
There has been some public backlash at the thought of Microsoft taking over and creating another Skype situation. Microsoft’s more recent purchases have been left to their own devices instead of being tinkered with. Will Discord get the same treatment?
